Every year, millions of people eat zongzi, watch dragon boat races, and call it a public holiday.

They think they’re celebrating.

They’re performing a protection ritual — and they have no idea what they’re being protected from.

The name itself tells you everything

Most people know this festival as Dragon Boat Festival. Fewer know its Chinese name: 端午节, Duan Wu Jie. Fewer still know what Duan Wu (端午) actually means.

Upright Sun. The moment the sun stands most directly overhead. Maximum Yang. The peak before the descent.

It’s also called Double Fifth — the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. In Chinese numerology, the repetition of five is not celebratory. Five is the number of the Five Elements, the Five Poisons, the five directional forces. Two fives stacked on top of each other signals intensity, concentration, volatility.

The name was never meant to sound festive. It was meant to mark something.

Before Qu Yuan, there was the dragon

The story most people know starts with Qu Yuan. But the festival is older than he is.

Long before the third century BCE, southern Chinese fishing communities were already marking this period with river rituals. The dragon was the central figure — not as a symbol of power, but as the spirit of water itself. Communities prayed to the river dragon for balanced rainfall. Enough for a good harvest. Not so much it caused flooding. The summer solstice was when that prayer was most urgent, because the rains that would determine the year’s harvest were still coming.

The early Chinese dragon was not the imperial creature it later became. It had the head of a horse, the body of a snake, the wings of a bird. It was a creature that crossed boundaries — between water and sky, between earth and heaven — and that made it the right mediator for what people were asking. The dragon boat races that feel like sport today were originally a ritual enactment of that relationship. Fishermen in the states of Wu and Yue were rowing dragon-shaped boats to appease river dragons as far back as 770 BCE. King Gou Jian of Yue used these same races to train his navy — which tells you the boats were already a cultural fixture long before anyone thought to attach Qu Yuan’s story to them.

That happened in the second century. Qu Yuan died in the third century BCE. The gap between his death and his association with the festival is over a hundred years.

So what was the festival actually marking during that hundred years? The same thing it marked before him: the volatility of this exact month.

午月 — what the 5th lunar month actually is

The 5th lunar month sits under the Earthly Branch 午, the Horse. It’s the peak of Yang energy in the annual cycle. Summer solstice lands right in the middle of it. Maximum heat.

Here’s the problem with peaks: the moment something reaches its highest point, it starts moving the other direction. Yang at its fullest is already becoming Yin. That transition is not smooth. It’s unstable, volatile, and the ancient Chinese knew it.

They called this period the season of the Five Poisons — 五毒. Snake, centipede, scorpion, gecko, toad. All five become most active when heat and moisture peak. This wasn’t symbolic at first — it was practical. These creatures were genuinely lethal before modern medicine, and they came out during this exact window.

But the Five Poisons became a wider metaphor for what this month does to everything: health destabilises, relationships that were already fragile tend to snap, decisions made without grounding tend to land badly.

Duanwu Jie is the civilisational response to all of that.

Qu Yuan, and why the story stuck

Qu Yuan was a councillor and minister in the state of Chu during the Warring States period. He warned his king, Lord Huai, that the northern state of Qin was an existential threat to Chu. He was right. Political rivals had him banished instead.

He watched from exile as corrupt ministers ran his country into the ground. When Qin’s General Bai Qi finally took the Chu capital and destroyed the imperial palace in 278 BCE, Qu Yuan had nothing left. A few months later, on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, he walked into the Miluo River.

What happened next depends on which version you read. Some say fishermen rowed out to save him, failed, and threw rice into the water so the fish wouldn’t take his body. Others say a river dragon intercepted the rice offerings, which is why the rice had to be wrapped in chinaberry leaves and bound with five-coloured silk threads to reach Qu Yuan’s spirit — and that’s how zongzi got their form. Another version says the dragon boats were the rescue attempt itself, rowers desperately searching the water.

The stories differ in detail but agree on the structure: rice in the water, boats on the river, drums beating.

The reason Qu Yuan’s story attached so completely to this festival is that it fit perfectly onto what was already there. A man of integrity destroyed by a volatile, corrupt period. A death that happened precisely when the calendar said things would be most dangerous. A community response built around containment, protection, and noise. The ritual already existed. Qu Yuan gave it a human face.

What each ritual is actually doing

Zongzi. Glutinous rice wrapped tightly in bamboo leaves. The rice itself is energetically grounding — heavy, Yin-stabilising, a counterweight to the season’s excess Yang. The wrapping matters too. Sealing the food was sealing something in. Containment as intention. The five-coloured silk thread binding isn’t decoration — five colours represent the Five Elements working in concert, a complete energetic seal.

Mugwort at the door. This is one of the oldest Duanwu practices and most people just think it smells nice. Mugwort is strongly Yang in its energetic properties — but it’s a stable, regulated Yang, not the wild swinging Yang of the season. Hanging it at your threshold was literally filtering what came into your home. The doorway as energetic boundary.

Realgar wine. Parents painted it on their children’s foreheads, wrists, ears. Realgar is an arsenic compound — genuinely toxic by modern standards. The logic was: fight a poison with a controlled poison. The Five Poisons were said to fear realgar. This is not superstition. It’s the same underlying logic as a vaccine.

Dragon boats. The drums, the collective force moving across water. This was dispersal — agitating the surface to drive out malevolent qi that had settled. The dragon was invoked as a creature that commands both water and sky, capable of managing the very forces being unleashed by the season. The noise was the point. Gongs, drums, the crack of wood on water. You don’t beat drums for sport. You beat them to move something.

Seal things in. Filter what enters. Drive out what shouldn’t be there. Every ritual follows one of those three logics. None of it is decorative.

What it looks like when people get it wrong

Observing Duanwu Jie as pure cultural performance — eating the food, watching the races, posting a photo — isn’t wrong exactly. But it’s like taking medicine without knowing what it treats.

The 5th lunar month doesn’t adjust based on whether you’re paying attention.

This is the period when health conditions that were manageable start flaring. When conversations that were already tense finally break. When the business decision you made quickly in June turns out to need six months of clean-up. People chalk it up to bad luck. It’s usually bad timing compounded by a volatile seasonal backdrop.

What the ancients built into this calendar — and what gets lost when festivals become holidays — is the idea that you need to actively manage your energy during this window. Not passively observe it.

Hang the mugwort because you know what it’s for. Eat the zongzi with the understanding that you’re grounding your body during a period of maximum energetic turbulence. If you have major decisions this month — financial, relational, professional — build in more deliberation, more support, more caution than you think you need.

The festival gives you the tools. Most people just never got the manual.

Both dates are classified as Establish Days (建日) in the Chinese Almanac — days traditionally associated with beginnings, setting intentions, laying foundations, and initiating positive change.

It contains a rare alignment known as a Quadruple Horse Formation.

Saturday, 13 June (11am - 1pm)

The Rare Quadruple Horse Formation

On 13 and 25 June 2026, we have:

• Horse Year (午年)

• Horse Month (午月)

• Horse Day (午日)

• Horse Hour (午时, 11am–1pm)

For a brief two-hour period between 11am and 1pm, all four layers of timing are represented by the Horse.

In Chinese metaphysics, the Horse is associated with strong Yang Fire energy.

Fire illuminates.

Fire transforms.

Fire burns away what is no longer useful.

This makes the period between 11am and 1pm on 13 and 25 June a particularly suitable time for symbolic cleansing, reflection, and renewal.

It is an opportunity to consciously let go of old baggage and create space for new opportunities.

Why Create Cleansing Water?

One practice that has been shared among metaphysics practitioners is the creation of cleansing water.

The concept is simple.

During an auspicious time, place a bottle of clean drinking water under direct sunlight and allow it to absorb the bright Yang energy of the day.

The purpose is not to create a magical object.

Rather, it is a ritual that combines:

• favourable timing

• sunlight

• intention

• conscious action

The water becomes a reminder of your decision to release what no longer serves you and move forward with greater clarity.

How To Create It

On either:

• 13 June 2026 (11am–1pm)

• 25 June 2026 (11am–1pm)

Fill a clean glass bottle or container with drinking water.

Place it under direct sunlight during the designated period.

As you do so, set a simple intention.

You may wish to say:

May this water carry the bright and cleansing energy of this day. May it help me release stagnant influences, gain clarity, and welcome positive opportunities into my life.

Once completed, store the bottle in a clean place for future use.

Five Ways To Use Your Cleansing Water

1. Clean Your Main Entrance

Add a small amount of cleansing water into a bowl of clean water.

Use it to wipe:

• the main door

• door handles

• entrance cabinet

• foyer area

In Feng Shui, the entrance is where Qi enters the home.

As you clean, focus on welcoming fresh opportunities while releasing stagnant influences.

2. Refresh Your Workspace

Declutter your desk first.

Then use a cloth lightly dampened with cleansing water to wipe a small section of your workspace.

Immediately begin an important task afterward.

Send the proposal.

Make the phone call.

Start the project.

The cleansing marks the reset.

Your actions create the momentum.

3. Prepare For Important Events

Place a few drops into your palms and lightly sprinkle them onto your face.

You may choose to do this before:

• a business meeting

• an interview

• a presentation

• a negotiation

• an important conversation

Allow it to serve as a symbolic reminder to approach the situation with confidence and clarity.

4. Revive Stagnant Spaces

Use a few drops or sprays around:

• altar spaces

• meditation corners

• unused rooms

• neglected areas of the home

Then open the windows and allow fresh air and sunlight to enter.

The real transformation comes from movement, cleanliness, and renewed activity.

5. Add It To Your Bath

Add a small amount to your bath water or final rinse.

As the water flows away, reflect on what you wish to release:

• stress

• frustration

• emotional heaviness

• old disappointments

• limiting beliefs

Imagine closing one chapter and preparing for the next.

The Most Important Ingredient

Many people focus on the date.

Others focus on the water.

But the most important ingredient is neither.

It is intention.

The timing creates the opportunity.

The ritual creates awareness.

But ultimately, it is your actions that create change.

Whether you choose 13 June or 25 June, use the occasion as a moment to pause, reflect, and consciously decide what you wish to leave behind.

Most people look at the BaZi chart for 2026 and see a chart dominated by fire. They’re right but they’re still underestimating it.

BaZi chart for 2026

Here’s the part most people miss: there’s a combination inside the year’s chart. The Tiger in the earthly branches doesn’t stay at all. Combined with the Horse, it transforms — and adds more fire to a chart that was already burning. The result is an overly heated chart, one that’s not just warm but structurally aggressive.

Just imagine throwing more wood into a raging fire.

Fire in BaZi doesn’t just mean heat.

It means Pressure. Speed. Volatility.

It means the environment is moving faster than most people are ready for.

What burns when fire is this strong?

Metal.

The Yang Metal sitting on the Heavenly Stem — and the Rooster in the earthly branch — are taking the full force of this fire. In BaZi, Metal represents financial institutions, global economic structures, and the people currently holding power. When Metal is this overwhelmed, the message is clear.

• Financial systems are under pressure. Power structures are being challenged. The people who thought they were untouchable are finding out they’re not. We’ve already seen the early signs of this across global markets — and the year isn’t even half over.

• What would balance this chart? Water. Water controls fire, and in this chart, Water also represents wealth. The problem? It’s completely absent. No water means no natural flow of cash. Revenue from old sources starts to dry up. What used to work stops working — not because you’re doing something wrong, but because the market itself has shifted underneath you.

• It also means disruption to supply chains that depend on steady, predictable flow. The pipelines that businesses relied on — consistent clients, consistent income, consistent logistics — are being interrupted at every level.

Now enter June.

The month pillar for June 2026 is Yang Wood sitting on Yang Fire — the Horse month.

Read that again: Yang Wood feeding Yang Fire, arriving into an already fire-dominant year chart.

Wood feeds fire. More wood means more fire. June doesn’t cool things down — it accelerates everything that was already happening.

If the year was a fire, June is someone pouring gasoline on it and then asking why it’s hot.

And here’s the illusion people will fall for.

BaZi chart for June 2026

Look at the June chart and you’ll spot the Rat. The Rat carries Water — specifically Yin Water, Gui. For a moment, you might think: relief. But there’s a hidden combination between the Rat and the Dog that most people don’t see. That combination removes the Yin Water and converts it into — more fire energy.

The water that appeared to be there was never really there.

This is one of the cruelest patterns in BaZi reading: a water element that exists on the surface but gets stripped away by a hidden combination. The relief you thought was coming isn’t coming.

What this means on the ground in June.

1. Cost of living pressure - Accelerating

2. Global supply chain disruption - Accelerating

3. Financial strain at personal level - Accelerating

4. Social and political tensions- Elevated

5. Old revenue sources drying up - Ongoing

6. Urgency for new market strategies - Critical

Elevated fire also means elevated aggression, impatience, and reactivity in the people around you. In negotiations, in relationships, in decision-making — expect shorter fuses. People are operating under pressure they can’t fully articulate, and that pressure has to go somewhere. Avoid such people where possible and use this against them or to your advantage if you have to.

So what do ordinary people actually do?

You can’t change the chart. But you can change how you move within it.

When the environment runs hot and dry, the strategy isn’t to match its energy — it’s to introduce your own water. You become the element that’s missing.

1. Stop waiting for your old customer base to come back. The market has shifted. The pool you’re fishing in has shrunk. Go find where the new pools are — new industries, new geographies, new audiences who haven’t heard of you yet.

2. Slow down your decisions deliberately. Fire energy makes everyone impulsive. The people who win in June are the ones who insert a pause where others are reacting. One extra day of thinking before you commit could be worth months of correction later.

3. Protect your cash flow before you think about growing it. Tight water energy means cash flow is constricted everywhere. This is not the month to stretch your runway unnecessarily. Secure what you have first.

4. Use Date Selection strategically. Not every day in June carries the same energy. There are specific days within the month that have natural water energy, which soften the fire and create better conditions for negotiations, launches, and major decisions. Work with the chinese calendar and select dates with good energies for your activities, not against it. 5. Innovate out of necessity. Fire destroys what’s old and makes space for what’s new. Businesses and people who were coasting on momentum are going to feel the burn. Use this pressure as the forcing function to build something that doesn’t need the old conditions to survive.

The chart is showing you what 2026 demands: adaptability, new thinking, and the willingness to find water in a desert. That’s not comfortable. But it’s honest.

The people who thrive in a fire year aren’t the ones who pretend the heat isn’t there. They’re the ones who’ve already figured out how to carry water.

Every Vesak Day, thousands of people queue at temples to pour water over a small statue of an infant Buddha.

Most do it because their parents did it. Or because everyone else is doing it.

Very few stop to ask: what is this actually for?

That’s what this post is about.

Where the ritual comes from

Legend says that when Prince Siddhartha was born in Lumbini garden, he immediately walked seven steps — a lotus flower blooming beneath each foot. He pointed one hand toward the sky and the other toward the ground and declared: “Heaven above and earth beneath, I am the Honoured One, the One who liberates all who suffer in the Three Realms.”

After that, nine heavenly dragons appeared and emitted the purest water to cleanse the newly born Prince.

The bathing ritual is a reenactment of that moment. Every year, on Vesak, we repeat what the heavens did at his birth.

But here’s the part most people miss.

The universal message of the ritual is this: it’s easy to wash away physical dirt. It is far more difficult to cleanse one’s inner impurity of greed, anger, and ignorance.

That’s the whole point. The water isn’t magic. You are the one being cleansed — if you approach it with the right intention.

What the three pourings actually mean

The fragrant water is poured over the statue three times. Each pouring carries a specific meaning — cleansing our body, speech, and thoughts to eradicate anger, greed, and ignorance.

In practice, each pour comes with a silent vow:

Three pours. Three commitments. Body, speech, mind.

This maps directly onto something I think about constantly in Chinese metaphysics. Your BaZi chart shows your tendencies — the energies you were born with. But tendencies aren’t destiny. The daily practice of refining your actions, your words, and your thinking is how you actually work with your chart rather than against it.

The Buddha figured that out sitting under a tree. BaZi gives you the map. The bathing ritual is the daily reminder to do the work.

How to do it properly

Most people rush through this in a temple queue without knowing what they’re doing. Here’s how to approach it with full intention — whether you’re at a temple or doing a simplified version at home.

At the temple:

A ladle of water is tipped over the head of the infant Buddha statue mindfully, with two hands, three times while kneeling to express respect. Don’t rush. Don’t treat it like a photo opportunity. The physical act is a vehicle for the internal one.

The mindset going in:

While bathing the Buddha, be serene, concentrate your mind, and contemplate. At the end of the ritual, your faith and vow, virtue and wisdom will be enhanced. Make a bow to the Buddha before you leave.

What water to use (if doing it at home):

The water must be clean and well-filtered. Use two fingers to draw the water and bathe the statue from the head. Afterward, drain the water onto a clean place — make sure it is not stepped on. Use a fine, soft towel to wipe the statue clean.

You can add flower petals or a drop of rose water to the basin. The scent is symbolic — it represents the fragrance of virtue.

The intention that makes it real:

While holding the water, pray sincerely: “As I now bathe the Tathagata, with the accumulation of pure wisdom and merit, may all beings be freed from defilement, aspiring to the pure Dharma body.”

This is a wish to remove greed, hatred, and ignorance — not just from yourself, but to send that intention outward.

Why this connects to Chinese metaphysics

Here’s my honest take.

The bathing ritual and BaZi are both pointing at the same problem: most people are running on autopilot. Reacting out of habit. Repeating patterns they never chose.

The Buddha Bathing Ritual gives everyone a chance to introspect — to reduce bad seeds, increase good seeds, open the mind, and raise the seeds of enlightenment.

BaZi does something structurally similar. It shows you the patterns in your chart — the unconscious tendencies driving your decisions. Once you see them clearly, you can start working with them consciously.

The ritual cleanses for a day. The chart gives you the full picture of a lifetime.

Both are tools. Neither one works if you’re not paying attention.

One thing to do today

If you’re near a temple — go. Queue up. Pour the water slowly. Say the vow. Mean it.

If you’re at home — fill a bowl with clean water. Place it near whatever you hold sacred. Pour it three times. Say the three vows out loud.

Don’t overthink the form. Get the intention right.

Today is Vesak Day.

It marks three events in the Buddha’s life — his birth, his enlightenment, and his passing. All believed to have happened on the same full moon day, centuries apart.

Most people in Singapore treat it as a long weekend. Sleep in. Maybe visit a temple. Go for brunch.

That’s fine. But you’re leaving the most important part on the table.

What Vesak day is actually about

At its core, Vesak day is a day to pause and reflect on how you live your life and how you can do better. Even non-Buddhists take part — visiting temples, contributing to charity. It’s not just a religious event. It’s a shared cultural experience.

The Buddha’s entire life was a story about one question:

Why do people suffer — and what can we do about it?

He was born a prince. Had every comfort imaginable. Left it all behind because none of it answered that question.

Then he spent years seeking answers the hard way. And eventually found them — sitting under a tree, going inward, reading the patterns of his own mind.

Sound familiar?

Here’s where it gets interesting

Chinese metaphysics — BaZi, Qi Men Dun Jia, Feng Shui — operates on the same fundamental idea.

Your life has a pattern. That pattern isn’t random. And if you can read it clearly, you stop fighting against the current and start moving with it.

The Buddha called it dharma. In Chinese metaphysics, we call it your destiny chart.

Different language. Same truth underneath.

On Vesak Day, Buddhists believe performing good deeds multiplies merit. In BaZi, we understand that timing matters — the when of your actions determines how much energy they carry. A decision made in the right season of your life hits differently than the same decision made at the wrong time.

This is why Date Selection exists as a discipline. It’s not superstition. It’s the recognition that timing changes outcomes.

The three events. Three lessons.

Vesak day commemorates three things. I want to reframe each one through the lens of Chinese metaphysics.

Birth (your BaZi chart) The moment you were born locked in a specific configuration of energy — your strengths, your blind spots, the recurring themes of your life. You didn’t choose it. But understanding it changes everything. Most people live their whole lives not knowing why certain patterns keep repeating. Your chart explains it.

Enlightenment (Qi Men Dun Jia) The Buddha’s enlightenment wasn’t passive. He decoded the nature of reality. Qi Men is the closest thing I know to that in metaphysics — it’s a strategic system built on understanding how energy moves in real time, so you can position yourself to act at the right moment. Not harder. Smarter.

The Red String. Don’t Ignore It.

When you arrive at a traditional Chinese or Buddhist wake, the bereaved family will often offer you a red string — sometimes inside a small red packet with a coin and candy.

Most people pocket it, forget about it, and go home.

That’s the mistake.

Here’s what you actually do:

• Accept it with both hands. Not one. Both. It’s a gesture of respect.

• Wear it loosely around any finger while you’re at the wake. It’s acting as a talisman — a buffer between you and the yin energy in that space.

• Before you reach home — throw it away. Outside. Not in your house bin. Leave it behind.

That red string is absorbing what the space carries. The grief, the qi of death, the energetic residue of a soul in transition. You don’t bring that across your threshold.

This isn’t superstition dressed up in tradition. In BaZi and Qi Men, we understand that environments carry energetic imprints. A funeral space holds some of the heaviest yin energy you’ll ever walk into. The red string ritual is one of the oldest forms of energetic protection we have.

Use it.

What to Wear — And What Will Actually Offend

Simple rule: muted, dark, somber.

Black, dark navy, dark grey. Loose, modest, understated. No bright jewellery. No statement pieces.

And for the love of everything — no red.

Red in Chinese culture signals joy, celebration, life. Wearing it to a funeral is tone-deaf at best, deeply offensive at worst.

The one exception? If the deceased lived a very long, full life — into their eighties or nineties — some families may actually celebrate this as a life well-lived. In those cases, the mood shifts slightly, and some families may even welcome warmer tones. But unless the family explicitly signals this, default to black.

The Money Envelope — Get the Amount Right

Bring Bai Jin — condolence money in a plain white envelope.

The amount matters more than most people realise.

Always give an odd number: $30, $50, $101. Never even numbers. Even numbers are for celebrations — weddings, birthdays, new years. Even numbers at a funeral send the wrong message entirely.

The practical reality is this money helps the family offset funeral costs, which in Singapore can run into the tens of thousands. It’s a communal act of support. Don’t skip it.

When You Arrive — What to Actually Do

You’ll likely see an altar with a photo of the deceased, incense, offerings. Here’s the sequence:

• Bow toward the altar and the deceased. A simple, short bow is enough.

• Light incense if the family offers it and you’re comfortable. If you’re not religious or not familiar with the ritual, it’s completely fine to sit quietly and observe. No one will take offence.

• Pay respects to the family. Approach them, speak softly, express condolences. In Mandarin: “请节哀顺变” (Qǐng jié’āi shùnbiàn) — “Please accept my condolences.” Or simply, “愿逝者安息” (Yuàn shìzhě ānxí) — “May the departed rest in peace.”

Don’t overthink the words. Sincerity reads louder than perfect phrasing.

Don’t touch the offerings. They’re arranged deliberately for the spiritual journey of the deceased. Moving them — even accidentally — is considered an interference. Observe from a respectful distance.

The Conversation Rule

A Chinese funeral is not a networking event. It’s not a catch-up session.

Keep your conversations relevant to the occasion — memories of the person, support for the family, acknowledgement of the loss. Gossip, trends, business talk — leave it at the door.

This sounds obvious. It isn’t. People get uncomfortable in grief spaces and default to small talk as a coping mechanism. Be aware of it.

When You Leave — Never Say Goodbye

This one surprises most people.

In Chinese culture, a direct “goodbye” at a funeral carries a specific connotation — one that implies you might be inviting another death, another occasion to meet like this. It’s considered bad form.

Instead: just leave. Or say “excuse me” as you make your way out. Say you have somewhere to be. A quiet exit is more appropriate than a formal farewell.

The Deeper Truth

The rituals around a Chinese funeral aren’t just cultural performance. They exist because our ancestors understood something that most modern people have forgotten:

Death is an energetic event. The space around it carries weight. The people in it are vulnerable. And the living need protection too.

One of the most common mistakes I see — and this happens even among people who've been studying Chinese metaphysics for years — is using Qi Men as a shortcut to avoid doing the harder work of understanding themselves through BaZi.

The moment the chart appeared, I felt uneasy. It was a Fuyin chart, which often signals a long and painful situation. The outlook is rarely good.

What the chart revealed

The scammer

He appeared in the Southeast together with the Delusion Door, which showed he had gone into hiding and was trying to mislead or confuse others.
Something else stood out. The Southeast palace was producing the police sector. This usually means the scammer either ends up giving himself away or leaves behind obvious clues.
In simple terms, he was trying to hide but was unintentionally helping the authorities.

The police

The police were in the South with the White Tiger, which represents fast and forceful action. This showed they were moving aggressively and were determined to handle the case quickly.

Our money

Our money was shown in the Southwest with Harmony. This usually means the person was working with others. Later we found out that someone else had lent him their PayNow account, claiming it was done out of goodwill.

Unfortunately the same palace also held the Grain Star and Death Door, which are both negative financial indicators.
There was also a Flying Horse and Emptiness, which can point to funds being moved away or even overseas, making recovery difficult.

The unexpected development

On Wednesday, 3 December, Mothership reported that the seller was arrested on 1 December and will be charged in court today.

The chart had shown the speed of the arrest clearly, especially with the Southeast producing the police sector.

While Ghost Month or Hungry Ghost Festival is often associated with superstition and fear, Buddhism sees the 7th lunar month very differently. It’s a time rooted in compassion, gratitude, and filial piety.

🌸 The Story of Ullambana (Yulanpen)

The Buddhist origins of the Hungry Ghost Festival come from the story of Maudgalyayana (Mùlián 目连), one of the Buddha’s foremost disciples.

Legend says Maudgalyayana discovered through meditation that his mother had fallen into the realm of hungry ghosts after death, suffering from hunger and thirst. In despair, he offered her food, but it burned before reaching her.

He sought the Buddha’s guidance, who taught him to make offerings not just for his mother, but also to the Sangha (the community of monks and nuns). Through the collective merits of the offerings and chanting, his mother was released from her suffering.

This event became known as the Ullambana Festival (盂兰盆节), which falls on the 15th day of the 7th lunar month.

🕯️ Why It’s Important

From a Buddhist perspective, the Hungry Ghost Festival is not about fear, but about:

• Filial piety (孝顺): repaying the kindness of one’s parents, even after they’ve passed on

• Compassion: extending offerings not just to our own ancestors, but to all beings suffering in the lower realms

• Generosity (布施): by making offerings to the Sangha and the spirits, we cultivate merit for both the living and the departed

In many Buddhist temples, Ullambana assemblies are held during this month. Devotees prepare food, incense, and donations to the monastic community, dedicating the merits to their ancestors and to all suffering beings.

🌙 A Month of Compassion, Not Fear

So while Taoist and folk traditions emphasise appeasing wandering spirits, Buddhism frames the 7th lunar month as a time to practice gratitude and compassion.

It reminds us that our actions can relieve suffering beyond this lifetime, and that our love for our parents and ancestors continues even after death.

Instead of seeing Ghost Month as unlucky, Buddhists see it as a month of deep spiritual practice, remembrance, and kindness.

The Hungry Ghost Festival (中元节 Zhong Yuan Jie) is one of the most fascinating traditions in Chinese culture. It takes place in the 7th lunar month, often called Ghost Month, when it is believed that the Gates of Hell open, allowing spirits to roam the human world.

This year (2025), Ghost Month runs from 23 August to 21 September, with the main day — known as Ghost Day — falling on 6 September.

🌙 What Happens During Ghost Month?

According to Taoist and Buddhist traditions, ancestors and wandering “hungry ghosts” return to the mortal realm during this period. Families perform rituals to:

• Honour their ancestors

• Appease restless spirits

• Pray for protection and good fortune

The festival is also considered the birthday of Di Guan Da Di (Emperor of the Earth), one of Taoism’s three great officials, making it an especially significant time for offering prayers.

If you’ve walked around Singapore during this period, you’ve probably noticed offerings left on sidewalks, at void decks, or near temples. These may include:

• Food offerings: rice, tofu, bean sprouts, fruits, sweets, wine

• Burnt offerings: joss paper, incense, and elaborate paper effigies (houses, clothes, even cars and smartphones) so the spirits can “use” them in the afterlife

• Getai performances: colourful stage shows with music, opera, and dance — now even livestreamed as e-getai. Don’t sit in the front row though — those seats are reserved for the spirits.

One traditional ritual is “burning street clothes” (纸衣): paper effigies of clothing and money are burned so that spirits are cared for in the afterlife. This act is seen as charity — once you start offering, it’s customary to continue yearly.

🚫 What Not to Do During Ghost Month

The 7th lunar month is often considered inauspicious, and many avoid major life events such as weddings, moving house, or starting a business. Common taboos include:

• Avoid staying out late or going swimming (spirits are said to linger by water).

• Don’t whistle, shout names at night, or pat someone’s shoulder — you may disturb their “protective fires.”

• Don’t pick up money or random items from the ground (they could be offerings).

• Don’t hang laundry outside overnight (spirits may “try them on”).

• Don’t disturb offerings placed on the roadside.

Some groups — such as pregnant women, children, or those going through difficult times — are believed to be more vulnerable and should be extra cautious.

Beyond the superstitions, the Hungry Ghost Festival carries a deeper message. It’s about:

• Remembering ancestors who paved the way for us

• Practicing compassion by providing for wandering spirits

• Maintaining harmony between the living and unseen worlds

The rituals serve as a reminder of humility, respect, and continuity — values that remain central to Chinese culture.

Recently, I experienced one of the most sobering moments in my metaphysics journey.

A close friend’s beloved dog passed away. What they didn’t know was—I had already seen it coming.

I had quietly cast a Qi Men Dun Jia chart when my friend first mentioned their dog was unwell. It wasn’t a formal consultation. They hadn’t asked. But I was curious. I wanted to see what the chart revealed—not out of malice or morbidity, but as a student of Qi Men, testing my understanding of this ancient art.

The chart was clear.

It pointed toward death.

It was the first time I had used Qi Men Dun Jia to divine something so final. And when the inevitable happened, my heart sank. Not because I was wrong, but because I was right.

Qi Men had spoken the truth. Silently. Accurately.

I never told my friend about the divination. Part of me wanted to. Maybe to prepare them, maybe to give some form of spiritual support. But a stronger part of me—guided by the principle I’ve always held—told me not to interfere with the natural flow of things unless invited to. If I wasn’t asked, I wouldn’t speak.

It’s a principle that has kept me grounded, even when my readings stir up difficult emotions.

This experience reminded me of two things:

1. Qi Men Dun Jia is incredibly powerful.
   Its ability to tap into the cycles of life, death, and change is not to be taken lightly. It's more than just a tool for career, wealth, or love—Qi Men sees everything.

2. With power comes responsibility.
   Divining someone’s fate—especially something as sensitive as death—is not for the faint-hearted. It demands not just skill, but maturity, compassion, and restraint.

Some may question my choice. Shouldn’t I have warned my friend? Could I have done something?

But I believe there is wisdom in silence. I believe in respecting both the heavens and human will. Just because we can see doesn’t mean we should always reveal.

That day, Qi Men taught me more than just about timing or outcome. It taught me humility. It reminded me that this isn’t just a craft—it’s a sacred bridge between heaven and earth.

To those learning Qi Men Dun Jia: never forget the weight that comes with insight. And to those who seek it—ask with intention, receive with reverence.

This is the truth we don’t want to hear:
The thing that makes you powerful might also be what limits you.
Your genius can also be your trap.

Before Qi Men Dun Jia helped people choose careers and start businesses... it helped empires win wars.

And it all started with a war no one was supposed to win.

It was the year 200 BC.

The great strategist Zhang Liang stood on a battlefield, outnumbered, outmaneuvered, and nearly out of time.

He had one weapon no one else had: a strange chart of symbols, stars, and doors that only a few in the empire knew how to read.

Using it, he shifted troops under the cover of night, bypassed the enemy’s flank, and launched a surprise attack — precisely at the time the chart indicated.

They called it “miraculous.”
But it wasn’t luck.

It was Qi Men Dun Jia.

🧭 Origins: What “Qi Men Dun Jia” Actually Means

Let’s break it down:

• Qi (奇) = Mysterious, extraordinary

• Men (门) = Doors, portals

• Dun (遁) = To hide, escape, shield

• Jia (甲) = The first of the 10 Heavenly Stems — representing the emperor, leader, or general

Put simply:
“Hiding the leader in mysterious portals”

Originally, it was used to conceal the emperor or general’s position, while using time-and-space energy to outsmart the enemy.

This was no divination tool.
It was a military strategy system used by the most powerful courts in ancient China — designed to manipulate outcomes through timing, positioning, and deception.

🐯 The Secret Weapon of Emperors and Rebels

Qi Men was kept top secret.
Why?

Because whoever had it — had the upper hand.

It was used to:

• Plan ambushes

• Choose auspicious times for attack or retreat

• Conceal weaknesses in battle formations

• Even plant spies in enemy ranks

During the Three Kingdoms period, Zhuge Liang famously used Qi Men to:

• Set up the “Empty Fort Strategy”

• Predict weather patterns for naval battles

• Psychologically outwit armies twice his size

This wasn’t woo-woo. This was warfare IQ.

🧠 From Battlefields to Boardrooms

So how did Qi Men go from ancient battlegrounds to modern life?

When the wars ended, the strategists didn’t vanish — they became advisors to the royal court, and eventually, to wealthy merchants, politicians, and scholars.

The battlefield changed.
But the principles didn’t.

Today, instead of asking:

“When should I launch a surprise attack?”

We ask:

“When should I launch my business?”
“Is this a good time to approach my boss for a raise?”
“Should I move cities — or stay put for another year?”

Same logic. Same symbols. New battlefield.

⚔️ Final Thought: Qi Men Isn’t Just History — It’s a Playbook

Most people think Qi Men is just a mystical chart.
But if you understand where it comes from… you start using it differently.

You don’t cast a chart hoping for good luck.
You cast a chart asking:

• What’s my best position?

• What’s the path of least resistance?

• How do I win — without fighting head-on?

In other words:
You stop playing checkers.
And start playing chess.

The Sad Truth: Most People Use It Wrong

They treat it like a vending machine: “Can I win today?”
But Qi Men was built for emperors, generals, and strategists. It was made to answer questions like:

• Should I attack or retreat?

• Where’s the enemy hiding?

• Which minister is lying to me?

In today’s world, that translates to:

• Do I close this deal now, or wait?

• Is this business partner trustworthy?

• How do I position myself to win long-term?

And when you start thinking like that — Qi Men Dun Jia becomes dangerous.
In a good way.

Final Thought: You Don’t Need Permission from the Universe

You need insight. You need positioning. You need timing.
Qi Men Dun Jia offers all three — if you know how to use it.

And no, you don’t need to wear a Taoist robe or chant mantras. You just need to start treating it like the strategic tool it was always meant to be.
